The Boxer’s ancestry can be traced back to the 19th century in Germany. It is thought they originated from Mastiff type dogs known as Bullenbeiszer and the Barenbeiszer. Later crossings with the Mastiff, Great Dane and the Bulldog produced dogs used for dog fighting, bull baiting as well as for pulling farm carts and working as cattle dogs. As well as bull baiting they were also used to catch wild boar. In later years they could also be seen in Circuses and theatres. It wasn’t until the very beginning of the 20th century that they became recognised as a breed and stud records were kept.In the 1920s was more of a guard dog in Germany.
